Category overview
A sanitary clamp end ball valve is the hygienic execution of the quarter-turn ball valve. It shuts by rotating a bored ball through 90° and joins the pipe with a clamp, without threads or flange bolting. KTN manufactures it as the KTN 191 series, with clamp ends to DIN 11850, body and ball in 316L (CF3M) and an internal polish of Ra 0.8 µm.
Three things separate it from a general industrial ball valve: low-carbon 316L, a wetted surface polished to 0.8 µm mean roughness, and a joint that opens by hand. The line is stripped and inspected between batches without a tool. The rest of the industrial ball valve family shares the closure, not the finish.
How to choose sanitary clamp end ball valves
Six figures close the selection.
- Tube outside diameter. The tube governs, not the nominal size: on DIN 11850, DN25 is 29 mm outside diameter and DN50 is 53 mm. Convert a drawing with the KTN DN to inches conversion table.
- Product and temperature. EPDM handles hot water, steam and both alkaline and acid CIP detergents. State fats or mineral oils, because EPDM is the wrong elastomer there.
- Working pressure. PN-10 covers transfer, filling and CIP return. A homogenising line needs a different family.
- Cleaning cycle. The −20 °C to +180 °C range covers hot CIP and SIP with saturated steam.
- Actuation. Every valve carries the ISO 5211 flange, so the same body leaves manual or automated.
- Lead time. Common sizes ship from stock; the rest is made to drawing in Rubí.
Applications and sectors
KTN supplies the KTN 191 series to five sectors where lines open for cleaning as routine.
- Food. Sauce, syrup, edible oil and purée transfer, and isolation at the inlet of mixing tanks.
- Beverage. Wort transfer in breweries, treated water, filter outlet and CIP return from tanks.
- Dairy. Raw and pasteurised milk, cream and whey, where residue in a dead leg becomes a microbiological result the next morning.
- Pharmaceutical. Purified water loops, syrups, solutions and sampling points under a validation protocol.
- Cosmetics. Creams, emulsions and gels, where full bore stops viscous product sitting behind the seat.
Where a line is opened daily, the clamp joint pays for itself in labour.
Types and executions we manufacture
KTN manufactures the KTN 191 series manual and automated on the same ISO 5211 flange. Body, finish and connection do not change.

What a sanitary clamp end ball valve is and how it works
The clamp joint is made of two machined ferrules, a gasket and a two-part clamp with a wing nut. The gasket seats in the groove of the ferrules, flush with the bore, leaving no step where product can stall. Hand tightening the wing nut seals it. Inside, a quarter turn aligns the ball bore with the tube and the PTFE seats close against the sphere.
Why Ra 0.8 µm is the threshold
Ra is the arithmetic mean roughness of the surface. Above 0.8 µm, the machining valleys hold product and shelter a bacterial film from the shear of the cleaning solution. Below it, the surface releases residue at the flow rate the CIP already provides, and the clean can be validated instead of assumed. KTN polishes body and ball to Ra 0.8 µm in its own plant.
What happens during CIP and SIP
CIP cleans with four factors: temperature, chemistry, contact time and mechanical shear. With the valve open, full bore keeps line velocity through the body, so it cleans like a straight length of tube. The exposed area is the gap between ball and seat, out of the flow while the valve is open. Cycle the valve two or three times during the CIP, with solution circulating, to wet that gap. Cavity-free geometry and tool-free dismantling are what make clean-in-place possible. SIP with saturated steam sits inside the +180 °C ceiling, and a visual check only needs the clamp released by hand.
Materials, balls and seats
KTN manufactures body and ball in stainless steel 316L, cast grade CF3M. The L carries the argument: lower carbon stops chromium carbides precipitating at the grain boundaries during welding, the mechanism behind intergranular corrosion beside the weld. Ferrules are welded to the tube on site, so that margin is used on every installation.
Seats are PTFE marked 1000 WOG. WOG stands for water, oil, gas, and 1000 is the pressure in psi the component accepts at ambient temperature, in service free of water hammer, roughly 69 bar. That figure qualifies the seat, not the assembly. The valve is rated PN-10 because the real ceiling is the clamp joint, and the gasket and wing nut set it, not the PTFE.
The stem carries an EPDM seal and the shaft an EPDM O-ring. Both cover hot water, steam and cleaning chemistry, while the PTFE takes the product contact. KTN confirms the elastomer against the product before manufacture.
Connections, standards and actuation
The clamp connection, called tri-clamp on the shop floor, follows DIN 11850, the standard for thin-wall sanitary tube. Its case is dismantling time: one wing nut released by hand against four to eight studs undone with a spanner, or a pipe section broken out to free a threaded valve. A thread also holds product in the root of the flank. Choose a threaded ball valve for utilities, and a DIN flanged ball valve where the line needs PN16 to PN40.
| DN | Inches (nominal) | DIN 11850 tube OD × wall | Pressure and temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| DN10 | 3/8″ | 13 × 1.5 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
| DN15 | 1/2″ | 19 × 1.5 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
| DN20 | 3/4″ | 23 × 1.5 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
| DN25 | 1″ | 29 × 1.5 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
| DN32 | 1 1/4″ | 35 × 1.5 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
| DN40 | 1 1/2″ | 41 × 1.5 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
| DN50 | 2″ | 53 × 1.5 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
| DN65 | 2 1/2″ | 70 × 2 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
| DN80 | 3″ | 85 × 2 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
| DN100 | 4″ | 104 × 2 mm | PN-10 · −20 to +180 °C |
The inch figure in the second column is a nominal designation, not a tube measurement. Clamps and gaskets are ordered by tube outside diameter, and the ferrule series (DIN 32676 or ISO 2852) must be confirmed at order: the two are not interchangeable at the same DN. KTN supplies matching clamps and gaskets and states the series on the order acknowledgement.
On top, the ISO 5211 flange takes an actuator from the KTN valve automation range, with mounting accessories from the same factory. Size it on breakaway torque with margin: a PTFE seat left closed for hours starts harder than nominal.
Buying sanitary clamp end ball valves direct from the manufacturer
KTN Valves (Kara Technology News, S.L.), a Spanish manufacturer based in Rubí, Barcelona, makes these valves rather than reselling them. Buying at source removes the distributor margin and keeps traceability back to the heat number. Seven lines close a quotation.
- Size in DN or inches, plus the outside diameter of the installed tube.
- Product, working temperature and working pressure.
- Cleaning cycle: CIP or SIP, with temperature and chemistry.
- Manual lever or automated, and actuator type.
- Ferrule series, DIN 32676 or ISO 2852.
- Whether matching clamps and gaskets are needed.
- Documentation, quantity and required date on site.
With those seven the offer goes out priced and dated. If the size appears among the sanitary clamp ball valves in stock, despatch is immediate. Request a quotation on the contact page or call +34 937 818 219, 8:00 to 19:00 CET.

Related categories
Clamp ends solve isolation in a line that comes apart. Inside industrial ball valves, part of the KTN industrial valves catalogue, KTN makes five further executions.
- Threaded ball valves BSP, NPT and SW: choose them from 1/4″ to 2″ on utilities, air and instrumentation, where the connection never touches product.
- DIN flanged ball valves: choose them from DN15 to DN300 in PN16, PN25 and PN40, or for a PFA lined body.
- ANSI flanged ball valves: choose them when the pipework is drilled to ASME B16.5, class 150 or 300.
- Wafer type ball valves: choose them to save weight and support, clamped between two pipe flanges.
- Metal seated ball valves: choose them for temperature, abrasion and high pressure classes, where PTFE would not survive.
Frequently asked questions
What is a sanitary clamp end ball valve?
It is a quarter-turn ball valve whose ends finish in ferrules for a clamp instead of a thread or a flange. KTN manufactures it as the KTN 191 series, with clamp ends to DIN 11850, body and ball in 316L and an internal polish of Ra 0.8 µm. It opens by hand for cleaning and inspection.
What is the difference between clamp, threaded and flanged ends?
A clamp is released with one wing nut and frees the valve in seconds, with no tool. A thread means breaking out the pipe section, and its flank retains product. A flange means undoing four to eight studs with a spanner. In a food plant, where lines open daily, clamp ends win on labour time.
Are clamp end ball valves suitable for food contact?
Yes. Body and ball are stainless steel 316L, cast grade CF3M, polished internally to Ra 0.8 µm so product is not retained. Seats are PTFE and seals are EPDM, both sanitary compounds. KTN issues a certificate of origin with every order and an EN 10204 3.1 material certificate on request.
What does 1000 WOG mean on a PTFE seat?
WOG stands for water, oil, gas. The 1000 means the component accepts 1000 psi, roughly 69 bar, at ambient temperature and in service without water hammer. It qualifies the seat, not the assembled valve: the KTN 191 series is rated PN-10, because the clamp joint sets the real ceiling.
Do they withstand CIP and SIP cycles?
Yes. The KTN 191 series works between −20 °C and +180 °C, which covers hot CIP and SIP with saturated steam. Cycle the valve two or three times during the wash, with solution circulating, so the cleaning agent reaches the gap between ball and seat that sits out of the flow when the valve is open.
What makes the best clamp end ball valves for a hygienic line?
Three specifications decide it: 316L rather than 316, an internal polish at or below Ra 0.8 µm, and a cavity-free full bore that cleans in place. KTN manufactures all three into the KTN 191 series and holds the common sizes in stock, so a replacement does not wait on a production run.
