Category overview

The DIN flanged ball valve is the default shut-off of European process piping. It arrives with two machined EN 1092-1 flanges and bolts onto the counterflanges without cutting pipe. KTN manufactures it from DN15 to DN300 in all three PN classes.

Above DN50 the flange replaces the thread, spreading the bolt load over several studs instead of one thread form.

How to choose a DIN flanged ball valve

Six decisions close the selection.

  • Flange standard. DIN EN 1092-1 or ASME B16.5. What is installed decides: the holes do not line up.
  • PN class. PN16 for water and compressed air; PN25 and PN40 for steam and pressurised process. Choose at working temperature.
  • Flange face. Flat or raised. It must match the counterflange, and it sets gasket and bolt load.
  • Body material. Stainless 316 for moderate chemical duty, carbon steel for water and steam, PFA lining when the fluid attacks metal.
  • Execution. Two-piece full bore to shut off, 3-way L to divert, 3-way T to mix, trunnion when torque climbs.
  • Seat and actuation. PTFE, reinforced PTFE or pentafite by temperature, plus an ISO 5211 actuator if automated.

Applications and sectors

The PN flange is the default connection of European engineering, so this execution appears in almost every plant built to EN standards. KTN supplies it to chemical and petrochemical, water treatment, desalination, food, paper, power and HVAC.

Water and air run PN16 with a PTFE seat. Steam and thermal oil move to PN25 or PN40 with reinforced PTFE. Acids and brine take the PFA lined KTN 123T.

PFA lined ball valves: the KTN 123T jacketed series

In the KTN 123T series the metal body is lined internally with PFA, so the fluid only ever touches fluoropolymer and never sees the steel. The metal carries the pressure and the DIN flange; the polymer carries the chemical resistance.

The argument is economic. Hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite and brine corrode 316 stainless, and the usual answer is an exotic alloy such as a nickel base. A lined body solves it with a steel shell and a fluoropolymer barrier.

The real limits are temperature and vacuum, not corrosion. The liner is chemically close to inert, so the fluid stops being the deciding factor. What matters is the maximum service temperature of the PFA and whether the line runs under vacuum: a sustained negative pressure can lift the liner off the body wall and collapse it into the bore.

Two names describe the same construction: buyers write PFA lined ball valve, engineers write jacketed ball valve or lined body. KTN builds it flanged, and as a jacketed wafer ball valve where face-to-face length is tight. State DN, PN, temperature and fluid to quote it.

3-way L port and T port

Choosing wrongly between L and T is the most common ordering mistake here. The L ball is drilled at a right angle: it connects the inlet to one outlet and closes the other, so it diverts. The T ball connects three ports at once, so it mixes or splits. A T fitted where the scheme called for an L leaves flow passing through the port that should be isolated.

What a DIN flanged ball valve is and how it works

It is a quarter-turn valve whose closure is a drilled ball rotating 90 degrees between two seats, fitted with two DIN EN 1092-1 flanges. Open, the bore lines up with the pipe; closed, the solid face meets the flow.

Sealing comes from two joints. The internal one is ball against seat: line pressure pushes the floating ball onto the downstream seat, so tightness improves as pressure rises. The external one is flange against flange, where gasket, face and bolt torque decide.

In the trunnion version the ball is fixed by shafts and the spring-loaded seats move against it. Torque drops sharply and stays constant, which is what large diameters need above DN150.

Materials, balls and seats

KTN manufactures the body in stainless steel 316, carbon steel or PFA lined. Stainless 316 is the default for moderate chemical duty, treated water and food processing; carbon steel brings the price down in water and steam.

The ball is solid and full bore as standard, so the nominal diameter stays intact and pressure drop stays close to that of the pipe.

The seat, not the body, sets the temperature ceiling. PTFE covers general service, reinforced PTFE takes more creep, and pentafite works where virgin PTFE flows under heat. Beyond that, selection moves to the metal seated ball valve, class VI to ANSI/FCI 70-2.

Connections, standards and actuation

The flange follows DIN EN 1092-1, in flat face or raised face (RF), with ISO 7005 design where the specification calls for it. A flat face needs a full-face gasket covering the bolt circle. A raised face concentrates the load on a narrow annulus, reaching the same gasket stress with less bolt torque. Bolting one against the other puts the joint in bending. See the flange faces guide.

DIN versus ANSI: why they are not interchangeable

A DIN flange and an ANSI flange do not interchange, even when the nominal diameter matches. The bolt pattern differs, the bolt circle differs, and the stud thread differs, metric on the European side and imperial on the American one. PN designates bars, ANSI designates classes.

A plant on EN piping with PN flanges takes the DIN valve. A line built to ASME B16.5 takes the ANSI flanged ball valve. KTN manufactures both, lined executions included.

The PN figure is the nominal pressure in bar at 20 °C, not the allowable pressure at any temperature. As the fluid heats up that figure falls, and the seat usually limits first. State pressure and temperature together.

Every valve carries an ISO 5211 top flange. The actuator is sized on breakaway torque with a margin, never on nominal torque, and that torque grows with DN and PN class. KTN valve automation supplies it mounted and tested.
